Elementary school teachers usually work with children from the first through sixth grades, instructing one class of children in many basic subjects, including reading, mathematics, science and social studies. In May 2008, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, elementary school teachers had average yearly wages of $52,240. Middle-school teachers made an average of $52,570 each year. Private tutors, depending on location and subject, can set their own rates.
